Movie Review – MIB 3/Men in Black III – So Much Better Than 2!

Men in Black III (2012)

Agents J and K are back… in time. J has seen some inexplicable things in his 15 years with the Men in Black, but nothing, not even aliens, perplexes him as much as his wry, reticent partner.

The original Men in Black rocked our World’s 15 years ago in 1997, a truly unique concept with whacky aliens and great chemistry between the two main protagonists.

The rather lackluster second part (Men in Black II) rolled in exactly 10 years ago in 2002 – it definitely didn’t cash in on the franchise and left us with a rather dull taste in our mouths.

Suddenly out of the blue (for me anyway), comes the 3rd part and apparently the end to the series. The series used the 10 year break very well and headed back to it’s roots, it delivered the same fun sci-fi comedy that the first movie nailed so well.

The chemistry between Will Smith and Tommy Lee is just great as always, it’s like the partnership of in the Rush Hour between Chris Rock & Jackie Chan.

MIB III (2012)

It’s a really fun film, and honestly speaking WAY better than I expected. The pacing is great, the plot is reasonable enough, the filming and cinematography is great and the whole flashback to the hippy era with a whole scene about Andy Warhol was just GREAT.

The 60’s/70’s part of the story allowed for a great soundtrack too.

And Josh Brolin is an amazing bit of casting, he really looks like a young less sullen version of Tommy Lee Jones – he’s a really powerful actor.

Josh Brolin as Agent K - MIB3 (2012)

Definitely good enough to tide me over until I get a chance to watch Prometheus! One of the movies I’m really looking forwards to this year.

Anyway MIB3 is a definite must watch for fans of the series, even if you’re not a particular raving fan – it’s an enjoyable movie and well worth spending your money to see.

I give it a Boris The ANIMAL – 7.5/10.

Sons of Anarchy – Violence, Sex & Motorbikes – What More Can You Want?!

Sons of Anarchy - FX

A man in his early 30s struggles to find a balance in his life between being a new dad and his involvement in a motorcycle club.

As far as dramas go, Breaking Bad is probably up there as my favourite – Homeland looks promising but I need to watch a few more seasons to make a fair judgement.

A close contender though is Sons of Anarchy, a crime drama by FX which has just wrapped it’s 4th season and is set for a 5th season in September this year. It’s extremely gripping television, larger than life characters, great twisting storyline, emotive situations and epic dramas.

Plus there’s plenty of sex, violence, motorbikes, guns, drugs and laughs – pretty much everything that makes good TV.

And of course the lead is a good looking bad arse – Charlie Hunnam AKA Jax Teller.

Jax Teller - Charlie Hunnam

And then there’s Clay Morrow played by Ron Perlman (Hellboy) who just straight up looks like an ape.

Clay Morrow - Ron Perlman

The Season 3 finale is some of the best TV I’ve ever seen, truly my mind was blown.

The show steps a deft balancing act between action and deep moral conflict, which keeps it interesting. This is by no means a shallow show, despite it’s subject matter – it deals with some very hard hitting social issues.

If you haven’t watched it, I suggest you start ASAP and get caught up before the 5th season airs. But be ready for some sleepless nights because this show will hold you tight and not let go, once you are dragged into the world of SAMCRO – there’s no way out.

Blogging WTF? At The Last Word KL – A Meeting For Copywriters

So a day after I gave a geeky talk – High Availability MongoDB & Replica Sets – A How To & Kinda Tutorial – I gave a much less geeky talk to a bunch of copywriting folk about blogging.

I thought I’d share it here, it covers stuff like blogging, the value of blogging as both an individual and a business, how to engage your audience and so on.

Movie Review – The Avengers – God Smashing, Alien Exploding GOODNESS

The Avengers (2012)

Nick Fury of S.H.I.E.L.D. brings together a team of super humans to form The Avengers to help save the Earth from Loki and his army.

I went through a period last year of watching a movie almost every weekend, it tailed off after a while though and honestly 2012 hasn’t been a great year for movies so far, the only thing I’ve watched which I thought worth writing about was Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol – that was the time I discovered the joy of TGV IMAX in Sunway.

I’ve watched a few things since then, but nothing really noteworthy – so far Avengers has blown everything out of the water in 2012 – it’s also doing amazingly well on IMDB with a stonking (and deserved) 8.8/10. I’m also of course looking forwards massively to The Dark Knight Rises in July and The Hobbit in December – those are big contenders for 2012.

I also have a fair amount of hope for Prometheus in June mostly due to the fact it’s directed by Ridley Scott.

Anyway back to the Avengers, of course I’ve watched every single Marvel film in the series –

Iron Man (2008)
Hulk (2008)
Iron Man 2 (2010)
Thor (2011)
Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)

Some were better than others of course, but Iron Man really was the only one that stood out for me – the rest were ok. There’s going to be an Iron Man 3 (in 2013) as well – so let’s see how that goes.

Anyway, back to the movie – The Avengers – I thought it was great! Especially on IMAX 3D – it was a visual spectacular and the most enjoyable cinema experience I’ve had for quite some time. It was very well paced, the dialogue was witty and the cinematography was suitably epic.

The Avengers (2012)

Obviously there’s not a whole lot in the way of storyline, but what were you expecting? In some ways the story is quite similar to that of Transformers 3: Dark of the Moon.

Acting wise the whole cast delivered, even Robin Scherbatsky – yah she’s in there! And for the record, this is the first movie where I’ve found Scarlett Johansson attractive.

This is definitely the best team based superhero movie EVER made and quite possibly the best comic book adaptation so far.

If you haven’t seen it yet, you should go and watch it ASAP at TGV Sunway on the REAL IMAX screen in 3D – it’s well worth the extra few bucks.

That’s all – go watch it! I give it a PUNY GOD 9/10.

High Availability MongoDB & Replica Sets – A How To & Kinda Tutorial

So it’s kinda weird, last year I did 2 talks in the same month, 1 on WordPress (High Performance WordPress – Scaling, Tuning, Optimizing & More) & one which was more random (The History Of The Future at WebCamp KL.

This year I ended up doing 2 presentations in the same week (actually on 2 consecutive days), and once again the first was technical and the second a bit more random.

The first one was about MongoDB and was for the KL Mongo User Group AKA KL MUG. For those that don’t know what MongoDB is, it’s one of a new breed of SQL engines in the NOSQL camp – this means no more horrible SQL statements, no tables/columns/rows. Just documents being stored however you like.

MongoDB (from “humongous”) is a scalable, high-performance, open source NoSQL database. Written in C++, MongoDB features:

Here’s me with my AWESOME Linode t-shirt giving the talk.

Living My Dreams

As we probably know by now, I love music. Especially break-beat EDM kinda stuff (Drum&Bass/Dubstep/Trance etc).

One of my favourite films during my seminal raving days was Human Traffic, and it’s probably still one of my favourite films today – I can watch it over and over because it doesn’t really have a plot.

It’s just a bunch of moments that all ravers will empathise with, captured on film. There’s one seen where the character Kip is selling records and wearing a wicked T-shirt with a set of turntables on it and the words Junglist Movement. I’ve wanted that shirt since I first saw the film around 1999. Here’s the scene with the shirt:

I don’t know why, but I recently had the urge to track down the t-shirt and buy it – so that’s I did.

Red Junglist Movement T-shirt

I ordered it, and it just arrive so I’m proudly wearing it today 🙂

ShaolinTiger - Junglist Movement

It’s also bloody hot today!

And yah I’m living my dreams – with my Junglist Movement shirt! Have a good weekend all.

Text From Dog

Funniest thing I’ve seen for a while, it made me laugh until I cried.

I guess you’d really have to be a dog owner & dog lover to get it though.
