Random Blog Post #3 – Lots Of Media Clippings!

Well this year is flying by, it’s May in a few days – remember if you haven’t already – submit your tax returns! Deadline is looming (April 30th – just 3 more days to go).

It’s been a busy month as usual, the house renovation is going well, things are starting to take shape and it’s getting rather exciting – although extremely draining on the bank balance.

Project Alpha has finally launched and it’s in the second week now – Niki Cheong’s segment. You can check out all the videos on the Project Alpha Youtube Channel here:

His first episode is here with his cousin Elaine Daly.

Movie Review – Un Prophète (A Prophet) – Intense & Gritty

Une Prophete/A Prophet

Condemned to six years in prison, Malik El Djebena, part Arab, part Corsican, cannot read or write. Arriving at the jail entirely alone, he appears younger and more fragile than the other convicts. He is 19 years old. Cornered by the leader of the Corsican gang currently ruling the prison, he is given a number of “missions” to carry out, toughening him up and gaining the gang leader’s confidence.

Again on my Oscar binge I decided to check out one of the entries in the Best Foreign Language Film category, sadly it got beaten by ‘El Secreto de Sus Ojos’ but still it was nominated so must be worth a watch.

It’s a good film, somehow it manages to be both quite slow and very intense at the same time. The character develop is superb, filming is kept simple and the Tahar Rahim a relatively unknown actor is excellent as Malik.

The film revolves around one person in the most part and a few others on the periphery, it’s recurring theme is education – mostly about business. Yes indeed underground or criminal business, but still business at the end of the day.

This is a movie I would most definitely classify as ‘heavy’ so make sure you are in the right mood to watch it as it’s very engaging. This is definitely not a Hollywood style movie but it will draw you in and wring you out, it’s somewhat of a masterpiece of movie making.

There has been a batch of films like this lately coming out of France, gritty and dull with extreme violence to make things more interesting – they have been labelled as “New French Extremity”. This movie follows that genre, but does it right and makes this film a compelling work.

If you want to keep up with what is going on you’ll have to be either fluent in French, Corsican and Arabic or be a fast reader of subtitles.

It’s definitely worth a watch, but it’s heavy going so be prepared. I give it a toothbrush sharpening 8.5/10.

A Guide To Buying A House/Property In Malaysia — Choosing A Unit

My previous post A Guide To Buying A House/Property In Malaysia — Getting Started gave some tips on where to look to find property for sale in Malaysia, how to deal with agents and how to basically get the process started.

Please note the below is about buying a landed property not a condo/apartment as my experience is in looking for a landed unit.

The best advice I can give you is LOOK AT AS MANY PROPERTIES AS POSSIBLE! I honestly thought buying a house would be an easier and faster process, I was so wrong. After doing some further research I found that most sources said expect to look at close to 100 properties before you find the right one.

Movie Review – Alice in Wonderland – Not Bad

Alice in Wonderland

19-year-old Alice returns to the whimsical world she first encountered as a young girl, reuniting with her childhood friends: the White Rabbit, Tweedledee and Tweedledum, the Dormouse, the Caterpillar, the Cheshire Cat, and of course, the Mad Hatter. Alice embarks on a fantastical journey to find her true destiny and end the Red Queen’s reign of terror.

Alice in Wonderland is a tale that I grew up with, familiar with all the characters and having read the classic Lewis Carroll book many times. Like in the early scenes with the bottle on the table, I already knew it said “Drink Me” on the label.

I guess having a familiarity with the story and the characters would add to the enjoyment of the film as IMHO it’s not particularly well put together and it’s embellished a little from the original (the whole marriage proposal thing – what was that about?). I prefer the story from the book personally, not sure what their logic was – perhaps trying to make it more interesting for the generation with a 5-minute attention span.

I find it strange too how the live action acting is domination by American’s where as the CGI/Voice talents are predominantly British – I guess talent vs box office recognition? Even though I wasn’t aware of the casting Matt Lucas from Little Britain was instantly recognisable as both Tweedledum and Tweedledee. With some old-school talent like Alan Rickman, Paul Whitehouse, Timothy Spall, Stephen Fry and Babs backing up with the other characters.

I would have liked to have seen Stephen Fry as the Hatter really 😀

The best character for me was Helena Bonham Carter as the Queen of Hearts who for some reason is known as the Red Queen in the movie – simplification I guess?

Alice in Wonderland - Red Queen

Alice herself seemed a little lacklustre, without much depth or character and older than portrayed in the book (in the book she’s 7 & a 1/2 in the movie she’s 19). Johnny Depp was ok as the Hatter but he wasn’t quite ‘mad’ enough – reminded me a bit of his role in Charlie & The Chocolate Factory.

It’s a decent enough film, not great but not bad either. I wanted to watch How to Train your Dragon…we actually went on Saturday night, but everything was sold out – so we bought for Sunday which was also fully sold out for almost all films. The only thing we could get tickets for was Alice!

Anyway will book this week online sometime for next weekend to watch Dragon and anything else good coming out (gonna give Clash of the Titans a miss I think).

I give Alice in Wonderland a half-way down the rabbit hole 6/10.

Random Blog Post #2 & A Little About The Nokia N900 Maemo Beast

I kinda like this style of blogging, like how I used to blog back in the day..free and easy, some pics, some words and what I’ve been up to. Kind of nice to keep a journal of what I’ve been doing too without any pretensions or over-thinking things. Just like I did last week the day after my birthday.

Maybe I’ll make a weekly thing.

I’ve just not been in the mood for anything this week, well apart from killing people and hitting things, so that explains the lack of my normal in-depth, time consuming kinda blog posts.

Mostly I’ve just been sitting around, watching movies and TV series and drinking. Just started Life and Lie to Me – both good so far, Life seems better though as Lie to Me seems a little formulaic rather like House but for deception. This one of the many bottles that fell foul to my mood this week (Jack Daniels Single Barrel)..it’s now empty, in the bottle grave yard with its brothers.

Jack Daniels Single Barrel

Having bought a house and now carrying out renovations, I’ve had to cut back on spending a lot…most of that includes not going out and the biggest one, eating cheaper, so I’ve been seeing a lot of things like this…sweet and sour pork rice and iced chinese tea.
