Movie Review – The Time Traveler’s Wife – *sadface*

The Time Traveler's Wife

Clare has been in love with Henry her entire life. She believes they are destined to be together, even though she never knows when they will be separated: Henry is a time traveler–cursed with a rare genetic anomaly that causes him to live his life on a shifting timeline, skipping back and forth through his lifespan with no control.

Starting it’s life as a novel from a relatively unknown author The Time Traveler’s Wife became a HUGE success in book form going on to become a bestseller in many countries.

Most who read it felt it would be a fantastic screenplay and were waiting with much anticipation for the news of a movie, the rights to the screenplay were bought by none other than Brad Pitt who was going to start in the movie alongside Jennifer Aniston.

Thankfully (IMHO) that didn’t happen and they cast Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams instead. The movie has had critical acclaim so far and is doing very well with a 7.2 on IMDB. I’d guess within 6 months or so it’ll become a part of the prestigious Top 250.

If you have a propensity to be emo, do grab yourself a box of tissues as you’ll find yourself bawling through-out the movie.

This is one sad film with no happy ending. It’s has no real plot or moral value or anything else you can define tangibly..it’s just a series of events and their effects on a small group of people.

The cast is great Eric Bana plays Henry very well (I’m starting to see him as a very strong actor) and well Rachel McAdams seems to be in almost everything nowdays, she plays the whole romantic emo role extremely well.

The other characters are of little consequence but they do their parts well enough.

It’s a very thoughtfully put together and well directed movie, the cinematography is somewhat muted and suites the film very well.

And thankfully for once lovers of the book are not disappointed, yes there are things missed out but the film is put together very well and successfully breaks your heart within the first 5 minutes.

It’s definitely worth a watch and is without doubt one of the better films of 2009, don’t expect it to be a sci-fi movie as this film is firmly lodged in the drama/romance category.

I give it a teary-eyed 8.5/10.

Kota Kinabalu (KK) National Park & Poring Treetop Canopy Walkway

After our adventures at the Monsopiad Cultural Village we headed back to KK city to stay overnight at Hotel Shangri La.

We had a free and easy night so we asked the guide and some others where we could get some good seafood, we should have Googled it first of course but we didn’t have any access to the net and forgot to check before leaving. Our guide recommended some seafood restaurants just down from our hotel, so we checked those out.

They seemed well recommended by locals (Located at Sedco Squared named Twinsky Seafood/Suang Tain), but well we didn’t fare so well paying over RM400 for a mediocre meal for 3. After checking of course tales of people being slaughtered there. I didn’t take any pics cos the food didn’t look particularly good and well I was slightly pissed at having to fork out so much.

We headed back to the hotel for an early night and up in the morning to head out to KK National Park where we would be spending the next evening. We took a leisurely drive with our new guide Saat up to the park and stopped off at a few interesting sites and viewing points along the way.

Our first sighting of the mighty Mount Kinabalu was from quite a distance and it was still extremely impressive. It was around midday though so the light photography was definitely against us, in person though it was a fantastic view.

On our way we stopped off at the famous pedestrian suspension bridge Jambatan Tamparuli. It’s quite a spectacular structure.

Movie Review – The Hangover – Hilarious!

The Hangover (2009)

Two days before his wedding, Doug and his three friends drive to Las Vegas for a blow-out bachelor party they’ll never forget. But, in fact, when the three groomsmen wake up the next morning, they can’t remember a thing. For some reason, they find a tiger in the bathroom and a six-month-old baby in the closet of their suite at Caesars Palace. The one thing they can’t find is Doug.

I heard a lot about this film before finally getting to watch it with about half of the #porkgang at my house. It has a storming score of 8.0/10 on IMDB and I think within the next few months it may well creep into the Top 250.

After watching it I have to say it’s definitely one of the best comedy films of 2009. It’s like a very much more grown up version of the 90’s roadtrip movies, or an Apatow movie that doesn’t degenerate into lame fart jokes and slapstick.

It’s an interesting twist on the old bachelor party genre too which generally explores the night itself where as this movie explores the day after.

The acting is great and the Las Vegas scenery is well captured, some characters are unforgettable like the naked Chinese man and his jaw-dropping dialogue.

All in all it’s a great movie, especially to watch with friends and enjoy the laughs together.

I give it a Tiny Chinese Nuts 9/10.

Nuffnang Friso Family Day – Jan 2010

What a busy start to the new year, starting from January first I had to wake up at 8am 3 days straight..once for a wedding on Friday the 1st, for this event on Saturday 2nd and finally for a video shoot on Sunday 3rd.

Then each day after that was a long and event packed day, fulfilling but very tiring.

I’m truly exhausted now! Anyway happy new year! And more about the Nuffnang Friso Family Day Out that happened on 2nd Jan 2010 at Kizsports and Gym at 1-Utama.

It was up early and off to 1U at about 9.30am for the event start at 10am. People were very early (I guess folks with kids are up earlier anyway) and the queue was pretty big by 9.45am.

Yes that’s Tony Pua there at the front.

Everyone had to sign up with stickers for both parents and kids and the kids got a t-shirt too.
