Movie Review – Sell Out! ($311.0u7!) – Amusing

Yeo Joon Han's Sell Out! ($311.0u7!)

Her name is Rafflesia Pong, a bottom-ranking arts show host who’s disillusioned with “those over-rated underachievers we call artists.” He’s Eric Tan, a product designer who’s just about to learn that it doesn’t pay to be creative. They both work for FONY, a multinational conglomerate whose mission statement, copied from a Taiwanese company, is to be original.

This movie has been around for quite a while and netted itself a number of awards around the World, oddly enough though it’s only launching in Malaysia in May 2009! It’s the first Malaysian movie to secure a theatrical release in Italy.

Anyway after viewing the trailer I was quite interested to see the movie and headed down to check out the premiere earlier this week.

The trailer is here:

The movie is a brave effort crossing a number of genres and not having an real plot to hold them together. It’s more of a statement about art, society and Malaysian culture (there are a LOT of cultural references) and it takes swipes at film awards, indie film makers and shady business practice (why innovate when you can copy!).

The lead actress Jerrica Lai playing Rafflesia Pong is excellent, I think she had a theatrical background which helps in this kind of slightly over-the-top film.

The lead guy Peter Davis was kind of emotionless, he reminds me of a pan-asian Keanu Reeves.

Hannah Lo was quite frankly terrible, she should stick to modeling – I don’t think acting is her forte.

Overall the film was enjoyable, it made me laugh and it started out extremely strongly. Some parts were plain lame and too long (draggy in places – fat boy running up the escalator, 2 old ladies fighting for the taxi etc.) and sometimes it felt like it was just trying too hard (heart disease guy).

The originality of the jokes wore a little thin too as they were overused far too much (especially those which aren’t really funny like “Don’t but me..”).

I’m not sure how the spontaneous songs will go down as in my experience Malaysians don’t tend to enjoy musicals as they haven’t been brought up with them (most people thought Sweeney Todd sucked for example when in fact I thought it was quite good).

Anyway this film is definitely worth a watch, it’s quirky and the best Malaysian satire you’re likely to see for a while so do check it out and support the local movie industry.

I give it a pretty funny 6/10.

My Experience with E-Filing at LHDN/Hasil PJ

So it’s tax season as most of you well know, everyone is scrambling to get their Borang BE and get it filled in or trying out the new E-filing system (which works surprisingly well).

Earlier today I headed to LHDN PJ (Just off the LDP opposite side of Giant near to MBPJ Stadium), conveniently it’s marked as a POI in Garmin so it was easy to go there!

LHDN PJ

It was too busy, getting the PIN for the E-filing was extremely easy and there was even a room where you could fill in your E-filing and there were people around to answer any questions or queries you might have.

It took me less than 30 minutes to queue up and get the PIN and fill out my E-filing tax submission for 2008 – very effecient and easy!

It was a little busier downstairs, It took me about 35 minutes to get to the counter.

I took a ticket to check on my Tax statement and see if was all in order. Sadly, it was not. I was sure I’d filed 2004, 2005 and 2006 previously and settled any outstanding amounts in February 2008.

It turns out 2006 perhaps wasn’t accepted, because it wasn’t marked as filed.

So I have to fill in Borang BE for 2006 and 2007. I’ll probably do them in May after the busy period, when someone can sit down and help me complete the forms.

All in all it was very easy, everyone was very pleasant and helpful – professional service through-out.

Mark me impressed!

Anyway don’t leave it to the last minute, especially for E-filing as the servers crashed last year towards the deadline due to overload and I’d guess they could well crash again.

Sunset At Batu Ferringhi Beach – Penang

After A Walk Down To Weld Quay and Chew Jetty and some rest it was time to head to Batu Ferringhi Beach for the sunset.

We reached just before 6pm (quite difficult to find parking!) then setup on the beach for some sunset photography, there was still a lot of activity and it was quite busy with people banana boating, parasailing, jet skiing and horse riding.

Jet Skiing is fun! Good way to get sunburn though (I found the hard way).

Jet Skiing

Horse Riding on the beach? Unless you know how to gallop or at least canter – I can’t see it being much fun. Anyway horseriding is not for people who have testicles!

Beach Horse Riding

The kids of course love playing on the beach.

Busy Busy Busy

I promise I’ll update properly soon, busy busy busy!

Diana

Sweaty afternoon at Sepang. Was super humid, saw some sweet cars (next pit to us had a lambo, a ferrari and a porsche!), got bitten to death by mozzies during dusk and rushed home for dinner after skipping lunch and having 3 redbulls I was buzzing.

Too many things on my todo list, oh well time to get slogging.

Apology From Malay Mail For Publishing Without Permission

Ok so last week my article about PR and bloggers together with David’s article was published in the Malay Mail without permission.

I wrote a fairly strongly worded e-mail to the Malay Mail to question their behavior and asked what they planned to do about the copyright infringement. Surprisingly they replied quickly, politely and professionally (unlike some other Malaysian publications). An excerpt of the e-mail recieved.

My sincere apologies and thank you for bringing this matter to our attention.
No excuses — the publication of both your blog posts without prior permission is definitely not condoned and neither is it a practise of Malay Mail to use articles without necessary permission.
I have investigated the matter and yes, absolutely — no matter how taken up the reporter responsible for the article was with your writings — we should not have used them without your prior consent.
She has been severely reprimanded for the unethical use of your postings and for the lack of professionalism displayed.
We take this infringement very seriously and I am offering to publish an apology in the Cyberspot page soonest to acknowledge the pieces were used without permission

And today the apology was published.

Malay Mail Apology

I’d like to commend the Malay Mail on their professional response and their respect for intellectual property. More publications and generally more people in Malaysia need to be aware of intellectual property and how important it is.

I still see many bloggers using copyrighted pictures without permission and without credit (some quite ‘popular‘ bloggers too), they think if they can find it on Google images it’s fair game. In fact what they should do if they really want to illustrate their posts with others work is search Flickr for images licensed under Creative Commons. Then all they have to do is credit the photographer and it’s all legal and good.

Anyway it’s good to see some people taking this seriously, I hope more follow suit! Thanks to Sheila Rahman.

Oasis Live in Singapore – National Indoor Stadium – 05/04/2009

So this weekend was a busy one, Saturday was Nuffnang Music Bash ’09 (pictures for that coming soon) and then back to sleep and up at 10am next day for a road trip down to Singapore.

We stopped at Malacca on the way for some lunch – awesome chicken rice balls at Hoe Kee (far far far better than the other two commercialised joints further up, their Asam fish head was nice too).

Chicken Rice Balls

Excuse the camera phone quality pics 😛 (I have no compact camera now, and I sure as hell wasn’t lugging the SLR to a concert.)

After that it was off to Jonker 88 for the Baba Cendol – one of the best things in the world!

Published In The Malay Mail (Without Permisson)

Well today David Lian and I were published in the Malay Mail (without permission).

Malay Mail Article

Battling for the Internet mind

The article is about PR and bloggers of course and they published both of our articles side-by-side (and made David look like a Simpsons character).

They did infringe our copyright by taking these articles (and even editing them) without our permission, I wouldn’t have actually minded if they asked as the final piece looks pretty good. And for once I wrote the article fairly well (and seriously) so it doesn’t look out of place in a newspaper. It’s ironic though what they did considering the subject matter of the articles.

I’ve had this problem with picture credits in Malaysian publications many times before, and even once with an article.

Of course David’s counter piece is also very well written so they sit well on a page together. And at least the picture of me is decent and I learnt of a new site – https://www.bloggersandpr.com/

Plus it demonstrates the power of blogs, two articles are worthy to take up a whole page in their publication (that tells me something about the general quality of their output).

You can download the full article here if you want to check it out:
