Movie Review – The Dark Knight – Jokertastic!

The Dark Knight

Batman and James Gordon join forces with Gotham’s new District Attorney, Harvey Dent, to take on a psychotic bank robber known as The Joker, whilst other forces plot against them, and Joker’s crimes grow more and more deadly.

Honestly I think Christopher Nolan can do no wrong….he’s only made 8 movies and 3 are in the top 250 on IMDB…and I’m guessing this will make it 4 (Memento, The Prestige and Batman Begins).

He’s back again to take us on another rollercoaster, Batman Begins was hailed as one of the best superhero movies of all time and it really returned to the roots of Gotham City..dark, brooding, nasty and violent. The character of Bruce Wayne was captured by a fantastic Christian Bale – he’s fast becoming one of the best actors around.

And this…The Dark Knight, just rocks in and blows you away. It’s sad, truly sad that Heath Ledger is gone and I would be surprised if he doesn’t nail an Oscar for his performance…he’s truly terrifying, unhinged and totally believable as the joker. It’s hands down one of the best performances in any movie I’ve ever seen. RIP Heath, you surely went out with a bang.

Heath Ledger as The Joker

This movie delves deep into the character of Batman and Bruce Wayne, his own flaws and how the Joker desires to make him look at himself and why he does it – does he have a deep down loathing for society? It’s a character study and a gripping one at that. The cinematography is perfect along with the sound-track – it really takes you there.

The Batpod comes out, and it’s awesome! Christian Bale is great as Bruce Wayne and Batman, although the spotlight isn’t on him so much in this movie.

Christian Bale as Batman on the Batpod

Maggie Gyllenhaal was better than Katie Holmes in Batman Begins….but still not the strongest player in the movie.

The rest of the regulars put in great performances (Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman and Gary Oldman). Not sure about Aaron Eckhart still..The Scarecrow made a very brief entrance too, but wasn’t really part of the movie.

The movie was long, and in places it felt it – this would be my one and only complaint. If not for that it’s near perfection. This is the most I’ve written about a movie for a long time and I definitely have to get a BluRay version of this to watch on a huge HD projector at some time in the future.

I give it a dark and dastardly 9/10, definitely close to being best movie of the year.

I still feel elite as I saw this movie on Tuesday…and IMDB still doesn’t have a rating because not enough people have watched it!

2 Years Into Photography

Well I don’t know if I’d call myself a photographer yet…but I’ve just passed my second year in photography..

I got my Nikon D70s on June 7th 2006, 2 years ago last month. I had some cameras before that, an old Olympus mju 35mm film point and shoot and I got my first digital camera in 2001 (which cost me a fortune) – the 3.2 megapixel Canon Powershot A70.

It did me well and most of my earlier pictures on this blog were from that camera.

I’d say I started photography properly when I got the D70s, before that I’d just started exploring what I could do with with the A70 and was starting to find it’s limitations in terms of speed, noise at high ISO, accurate white balance and fine tuning controls. I decided against getting a bridge or prosumer camera and to go straight for a dSLR.

Nikon D70s

My choices at that time were the Canon 350D, the Olympus E-500 and the Nikon D70s.

I hardly got chance to use the camera, and had only just bought my first lens other than the kit lens (A Tamron SP90mm Di Macro Lens)…and my camera was stolen only 3 months after I’d bought it.

Camera Stolen

That was heartbreaking to say the least…by that time I’d completely gotten the photography bug though so I couldn’t give up…I had a choice to make between getting the Nikon D80, which had just been released or the higher model the Nikon D200. I went for the D200 for various reasons (solid build, more accurate metering, CF card rather than SD and so on) and I have to say I’ve never regretted the decision.

Anyway here are a few of my personal favs I’ve taken in the 2 years since I’ve gone from complete noob to slightly less noob.

I’ve had a stranger buy one of my pictures though, I’ve been published in quite a few magazines and national papers, I’ll have a spread in FHM August, I’ve shot a major musical event and I’ve recently seen one of my pictures on a billboard! I’ve got a lot of unpublished stuff, so perhaps I’ll make an effort to get it on my blog. Also of course we started Shutter Asia to expand my learning and network of photographers for outings and trips – so far it’s been great!

It’s a start!

I’ve still gotten a long way to go though, only 2 years into photography…probably another 23 years to go before I get any good 😀 Most things take at least 25 years to master reasonably well.

Movie Review – Hancock – ASSHOLE!

Hancock

A hard-living superhero who has fallen out of favor with the public enters into a questionable relationship with the wife of the public relations professional who’s trying to repair his image.

This is a movie I was looking forward to for some time as Will Smith is really growing as an actor, apart from that this is a novel movie concept – it’s not a Marvel superhero! It’s not from a comic book and the main character is somewhat dysfunctional. Thanks to Nuffnang for the screening!

You can say his last two movies weren’t exactly amazing too, they were all about Will Smith, something like Will Smith showcases (I Am Legend and The Pursuit of Happyness).

Will Smith played his character very well, the drunkard, bumbling, overpowered Hancock (Without being too Willsmithish). The character was a breath of fresh air, the dialogue was good (apart from the stupid censorship – they let ‘Fuck’ through but censored ‘Asshole’ about 100 times?).

Come-on Asshole isn’t even that bad a word is it?

ASSHOLE ASSHOLE ASSHOLE ASSHOLE ASSHOLE!

Will Smith as Hancock

Say it one more time…and I’ll…haha. Watch the movie and you’ll know. The rest of the characters were decent enough and Charlize Theron was excellent as usual…and SUPER hawt.

Charlize Theron in Hancock

There are some interesting twists and turns in the movie and it’s filmed beautifully, it has a very realistic feel without too much fancy CGI. It’s more about the characters and their relationships than anything else.

It’s not a typical superhero showcase as Hancock would say….they are all GAY.

One of the best lines in the movie is..

Well you should sue McDonalds because they fucked you up!

Anyway if it wasn’t for the horrible censorship I’d probably give it an enjoyable 7/10, but with the mashed up dialogue….I’d have to give it a worth watching 6/10.

Nice Photo/Picture – What Camera/Lens Did You Use?

Now this is something that really irks me…

I first encountered it when I joined some Malaysian photography forums a couple of years back, there was a lot of “Wow nice pics, what camera did you use?!” – usually stated with horrible grammar and spelling.

I was a member of a bunch of more International forums too and noticed that I didn’t really see that so much, I got more involved in Flickr then and hardly ever saw it there – perhaps because the EXIF info is more easily available (EXIF show what settings and camera were used).

But then there are plugins for Firefox that can show you EXIF in pictures too (Opanda, FxIF, EXIF Viewer) if you really want to know what was used to take the picture, I think it’s more important for people to check the settings rather than the camera used.

But why do they care what lens and camera was used? How does it matter? If it’s more expensive, or a top-end camera does that mean I have less skill in taking a nice picture?

You don’t meet a published author and say “Hey I read your book, it was really good – what typewriter did you use?”

Wouldn’t that be considered a big insult?

It’s just a tool that achieves an end result, it’s not what makes the picture. Given a better camera makes it EASIER to take pictures in certain situations and certainly makes changing settings and start-up faster..but it doesn’t effect the exposure, composition, concept or understanding of light displayed by the photographer.

The sensor in a low end dSLR and a high end is often the same, the difference is the build quality of the body, the external buttons (high end cameras have a LOT more buttons) and the speed of processing/taking pictures (faster processor and bigger buffer).

The image quality (known as IQ) is about the same, the photographer is making the difference.

Lenses make more of a difference, but at web size (500-800) pixels a shot with a low-end kit lens (like the Nikon or Canon 18-55) and a high end f/2.8 lens at mid range aperture (f/5.6-8) are indistinguishable.

So really it doesn’t matter either, and that is why it irks me.

It’s one of the reasons why I stayed on Flickr more than the local forums, and then got tired of both and started Shutter Asia – we totally avoid any gearheads if possible (people who think buying the latest most expensive gear will give you awesome pictures and ALWAYS ask “Wow nice bokeh, what lens did you use?“) and we avoid any hero worshiping of ‘senior’ or ‘sifu’ photographers that take crappy pics but have expensive gear.

There’s an endemic in the photography scene in Malaysia at the moment, all you need to do to get praised is:

1) Take a picture of a pretty girl (doesn’t have to be that pretty)
2) Use a long lens with a wide aperture and get creamy bokeh (85mm f/1.8, 135mm f2/0, 70-200mm f/2.8)

People will worship you like you’re a God. You can have a crappy exposure, blown highlights, green whitebalance, bad composition (chopped limbs) but as long as you have the girl and the bokeh you are super kau pro photographer.

All you need to do is browse some of the famous photographers on Flickr and see they are using 3.2 megapixel compact cameras….yeah they can’t blow up their pics to 40″x30″ prints – but they still are making superb images.

Pick any brand, any compact camera and you’ll find superb images.

So please don’t insult people by asking what camera or lens they use, just appreciate their pics, give some feedback and constructive criticism if possible. The picture they took is pretty much possible with any camera and lens, it’s their skill and vision that made the image – not the camera.

Never forget that.

Chiling Falls Near Kuala Kubu Baru, Selangor

Chiling Fall is one of the more popular (but quite difficult to reach) waterfalls in Malaysia, you can check out some info and pics at Waterfalls of Malaysia: Chiling.

Basically you have to be prepared to get wet, hike for a good 1-2 hours and cross a river 5 times (each way!) which can be quite scary if the current is strong and the water level is high. And it’s still only listed as a moderate fall…haven’t tried a difficult one yet.

The entrance looks like this, nothing special.

Then you cross this suspended bridge.

The River looked pretty strong when we crossed the bridge, which didn’t bode well for our coming adventure.

Golden Dragon Buddhist Temple (Chin Loong San) – Sg Choh, Rawang

We dropped off here on the way to Chiling Falls sometime back, so we grabbed a few shots before we headed off for breakfast and a quick stop at the Dam.

The first thing that strikes you is the rather majestic buddha in the sky.

There are rows of statues on the ground too, the different immortals and stuff I guess. Better to ask Suan as I’m no expert on Buddhism.

Movie Review – Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull – Whipsnapping!

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

In 1957, Indiana Jones is thrust back in action, venturing into the jungles of South America in a race against Soviet agents to find the mystical Crystal Skull.

So Indy is finally back with the 4th part and high expectations with the first Indiana Jones movie back in 1981 being one of the best movies ever made (Raiders of the Lost Ark – #16 on IMDB). The Last Crusade was good too, Temple of Doom wasn’t so great but was still enjoyable. All in all a great trio of movies..I was excited about Indy 4 coming out since it was rumoured then announced..

Finally I got the chance to watch it!

All in all it was good, it wasn’t fantastic…it won’t go down in the archives as a classic like Raiders of the Lost Ark but it was pretty decent.

Does Harrison still have it as Indy? Yeah he does! He kicked butt. I have to say the humour of the earlier films wasn’t there in this one. It seemed a little too polished and a little less fantastic.

Our man held his end up tho, old he may be he still rocked and he was still pure Indy!

Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones

Shia LaBeouf was actually pretty decent and far less annoying than I expected him to be, Ray Winstone was far less of a bad-ass than he usually plays.

The rest of the cast were good, not a lot of depth to the characters though and I think the first time I’ve seen Cate Blanchett playing a real baddy.

The action sequences were good although the ending was a bit ‘WTF is this ID4?’

It’s certainly lacking the magic and suspense of the earlier 3 movies..I’d have to say so far this is the worst Indy.

Direction was good of course by Spielberg but mainly I think it’s the script that let it down, should they have made this movie? I guess not…but they did, I hope they don’t make another. Let Indy live as a legend!

All in all I’d give it a worth watching 6/10.

Nuffnang Wild ‘Live’ Blogging Party – June 21st Hartamas

So the party was a blast! Loads of people turned up and the outfits were fantastic, all different kinds, self made, cobbled together from existing stuff and the more flashy rented outfits (gorillas and cows were popular).

Liang was a great emcee as usual and it was a good night all in all, nice food, good company, loads of bloggers and free beer (yay!).

I was keeping it real in my mad tiger skin.

ShaolinTiger

I didn’t wear it all the time as it was hot inside and out…and the jacket was quite thick.

Firdy doesn’t need the monkey mask, Nicholas doesn’t look too impressed.

Movie Review – The Incredible Hulk – HULK SMASH!

The Incredible Hulk

Scientist Bruce Banner desperately hunts for a cure to the gamma radiation that poisoned his cells and unleashes the unbridled force of rage within him: The Hulk. Living in the shadows–cut off from a life he knew and the woman he loves, Betty Ross–Banner struggles to avoid the obsessive pursuit of his nemesis, General Thunderbolt Ross.

The new Hulk movie came somewhat out of the blue and very quickly after the fabulous Ironman, it’s another Marvel production and considerably better than the first Ang Lee effort “Hulk“. It wasn’t as hyped as Ironman and perhaps they should have bought it out first…

Not to say it’s not a good movie, but it’s hard to compete after Ironman. It’s doing well om IMDB with a 7.9 at the moment – I’d say it’ll go down to somewhere about 7-7.2 as it’s not quite that good.

Some found the Ang Lee version much to ‘talky’, this one is a bit slow in the beginning too – it does pick up. Hulk is a sad story after all and thankfully it’s much better played out in this version though.

Edward puts in a good performance as the weakling Banner trying to hide away and solve his problem with Gamma poisoning.

Edward Norton as Bruce Banner

Liv Tyler is a bit annoying, she seems to be lacking depth..the Hulk on the other hand is fantastic. Especially the show down with the Abomination!

Hearing those immortal words of “Hulk Smash” was fantastic.

The Incredible Hulk

The rest of the cast was solid, William Hurt was great as the general and looked as though he came straight out of the book. Tim Roth was good as the slightly twisted Blonsky and the rest of the cast supported well (with the cameos from Stan Lee and the REAL Hulk Lou Ferrigno).

The Hulk is a bit of a one dimensional character himself, only the aspect of Banner adds something to the story…and the tussle between Ross and the General.

I’ll be interested to see where they take it after this.

I give it a Hulk Smashing good 7/10.
