Marié Digby – Harnessing (or abusing) The Social Web

I’m sure you’ve heard of this chick if you’re connected to the online world, one of the big Youtube phenomenas of 2007 coming up with an acoustic version of Rihanna’s Umbrella.

If you haven’t heard of her watch this first:

That’s Marié Digby, one of the new social web stars. If you listen to commercial radio in Malaysia you will have heard of her too as they play this acoustic cover on both Hitz and Mix (pretty frequently).

It’s definitely a good cover and most prefer it to the rather repetitive and annoying original (which really does get stuck in your head).

Following the success of this cover she became extremely famous online and fairly famous in mainstream terms.

The song was subsequently played on the radio station STAR 98.7, was featured on the third season opening episode of the MTV show The Hills,[1] and peaked at #10 on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles chart. Digby performed the song on the late night talk show Last Call with Carson Daly on August 2, 2007.

From Wiki.

And of course it helps she’s hot and female (mixed Japanese & Irish American).

I thought it was great, people getting pushed into the mainstream by the power of the social web and virality of grassroots videos and music like our good friend Ronald Jenkees.

It got interesting when I later found out it was all a carefully planned campaign, she wasn’t an independent artist and she wasn’t just spreading her love of music on Youtube…she was already signed to Hollywood Records.

So she was basically feiging amateur status to create buzz on the Internet, pretty smart if you ask me (this is known as astroturfing).

She has of course denied this…but read this article:

Wall Street Journal: YouTube Phenom Has a Big Secret

Ms. Digby certainly isn’t the first professional to feign amateur status on YouTube. Last year, “LonelyGirl15” was revealed to be a 19-year-old actress, working with filmmakers represented by the Creative Artists Agency.

The fact that a big company supported Ms. Digby’s ruse reflects how dearly media giants want in on the viral revolution that’s changing how young consumers learn about new entertainment — even if it means a tiny bit of sleight-of-hand. It also reflects how difficult it is for new recording artists to get noticed now that young fans are paying more attention to Web sites such as Google Inc.’s YouTube and News Corp.’s MySpace than to traditional media like commercial radio.

Interesting stuff, it shows how powerful the web is becoming in launching people, especially social media sites like Youtube and Flickr.

We Ate This Updated – Yo! Sushi – Pavilion KL

Quite possible my new favourite Sushi joint, excellent food, good service, nice ambiance and reasonable prices. A lot of people have complained about it, but I can’t say it’s terribly expensive. It’s more than Gunky Sushi or Sushi Kong….but the food you get is worth it. And they have some really unique stuff, where else do you get creamed cheese or avocado?

Or miso black cod!

Yo Sushi

I want to try the one in Gardens too, plus people keep mentioning Zanmai..I tried the Salmon Sashimi there tho and it was gross.

Anywhere else with good Salmon Sashimi?

Streamyx is Down Again

Well my Streamyx is down again, I have to say it’s been quite some time since I’ve had any problems with it. It’s been relatively stable and reasonably fast for quite some time.

After I got back from CNY it was off though, the DSL is syncing but the PPoE connection just isn’t happening, not really sure what the problem is.

I hope when I get back tonight it’s ok though..

If not blog updates might be sparse 🙂

I can just about manage to play Utopia from my phone, but updating my blog from my phone? Too much effort!

Didn’t take many pictures this festive season, it was quiet as usual. I enjoyed the empty roads of KL though, apart from when I went to Pavilion (which was still insane and the car park was full). So I just parked at Lot 10 and walked across.

Yo Sushi! Rocks..will write about it on We Ate This.

Enjoy going back to work…hahaha.

Oh yah and it’s 4 years today since I moved to Malaysia – that’s quite a long time.

The State of Public Transport in Malaysia

This is a much discussed issue, especially with the recent tragedy at Slim River and the deaths of 3 young bright citizens (20, 21 and 23) of Malaysia.

I often wonder if having a system like we do in the UK would make much difference, in UK it’s know as the MOT or Ministry of Transport test.

It’s a test that EVERY vehicle has to go through every year after it’s 3 years old or more, if you don’t pass the test you can’t get your roadtax – if you can’t get your roadtax you can’t renew your insurance. Everything is linked together.

If there’s any failures on your test you have 10 days to retest, if not your vehicle is marked as unfit for the road, it’s a fairly cheap test at £50.35 for a regular car but I think it really helps.

Australia has a similar scheme and so does the US I believe.

Some may say the developing economy of Malaysia can’t support such a scheme as many people can’t afford to keep their cars or buses in safe working conditions.

But is it really worth risking people’s lives for? Surely these deathtrap cars shouldn’t be on the road.

Buses and public service vehicles should be strictly monitored for safety along with the drivers, 13 outstanding summons? For someone that is essentially in charge of 30 peoples lives?

Any cars without roadtax that are parked on public property (note you don’t even have to be DRIVING the car) can be towed away and crushed, yes not impounded but destroyed.

This is not the first incident with a bus in Malaysia, and it surely won’t be the last until things start to change. Drivers must be paid and trained properly, they must be responsible and not overworked.

The buses and vehicles used to transport people around the country must be well maintained.

I have to say personally I feel quite safe on the LRT, but the buses in Malaysia in general are horrible. The only ones I feel safe on are those luxury buses which are very well maintained and have well trained and rested drivers (Plusliner, Aerobus etc).

But those aren’t exactly affordable for the average student and are privately run, so not really considered as public transport.

If you feel that this is an important issue there’s an online petition you can sign here which is going to be presented to the Ministry of Transport.

Bus Crash No More

You can also read more about the issues here:

https://buscrashnomore.blogspot.com

Sadlly it’s most likely the bright young students of Malaysia that are going to be endangered as they take the cheap buses from city to city during festive seasons and study breaks.

This is something which can and must be addressed.

Triumph presents Justin Yap, Jimmy Lin & Ken Wong at M-IFW 2007

You might remember I went to M-IFW a while ago, I posted one set TIAMO (Sylvia Lim) Presents Jonathan Cheng at M-IFW 2007 and promptly forgot I had stayed for another show after that.

The favourite of photographers, Triumph presents Justin Yap, Jimmy Lin & Ken Wong.

Somehow Triumph shows always tend to be the most heavily popular by photographers, I wonder why that is..perhaps it’s indicative of the quality of their models? Or it’s just something else. Due to that there’s always a lot of heads, lenses and flashes popping into your frame, which makes it even harder.

This show was even harder technically speaking than the previous as the main lights were off and it was pretty dim, I had to bust out the flash for some fill. I tried shooting with the 85mm f/1.8 without flash, but it just wasn’t happening.

I would have loved to catch Carven Ong a couple over the weekend, but I was busy on that day.

They started out with minimal clothing right away – always a good sign 😀

I blame the cropped foot on using a prime lens..

Cropped Foot

Shooting with the 85mm did give fantastic depth of field though.

The models were definitely a class above what I’ve seen in Malaysia normally.

After that was some stuff from Sloggi, which you couldn’t see as all the models were wearing boxes..no not boxers – BOXES!

Following on was some kinda sporty, casual theme with the lingerie integrated somehow.

Sporty

There were all kinds of accessories like inflatable rubber ducks, raincoats, balloons and vinyl umbrellas.

Big hats were definitely in too.

The last set was a bit more kinky, black and red, lacy and more dressy.

And that was the end of Triumph at M-IFW 2007, that’s all I shot – maybe I’ll do more next year if I win the lottery and get a 70-200mm f/2.8 VR!

End end of Triumph

Eibach & BBS Track Day in Shah Alam

Some time last year I attended an event for Eibach and BBS track day at the car park for Shah Alam stadium, they had some of the guys over from Europe to talk about their products.

The morning talks were actually very interesting, there’s an amazing amount of engineering that goes into making suspension and alloy wheels!

I think it was my first time covering an event and my first time trying out some panning, luckily it was a bright sunny day which made it easier – and I tried some whacked up wide angle panning!

The cars used were Naza Bestari and the tyres sponsored by Toyo, there were 3 cars, one with standard suspension, one with Eibach’s normal upgrade (not too stiff) and one with coilovers (mega stiff).

Eibach & BBS Track Day

BBS rims are very nice, but they’ll set you back a fair amount (around 6k for a set).

BBS Rims

After an introduction the press and dealers got to try out all 3 cars on the small carpark track to test the handling with the various types of suspension.

Track Day

The red car was factory fresh, standard wheels and suspension and as you can see a considerable amount of body roll.

Red Car

The silver car was fitted with the intermediate suspension and suffered a lot less body roll, but was still comfortable without being too bumpy.

Silver Car

Silver Car

The black car had much harder coilover suspension and cornered really well.

Black Car

I tried both the silver and the black, I didn’t bother with the red as I pretty much know what the factory ride is like.

There was a small slalom stretch at the start of the course to try out the handling.

Slalom

I’d just bought my superwide lens then I think and I was going a bit mad with it! Can’t blame me though right 10mm is damn cool.

Shah Alam Track

I even did super mega superwide panning!

Superwide Panning!

Looks wicked large on black.

Shooting at f/20 to get the slow shutter speed, this was the day I discovered an immense amount of dust on my sensor!

It was a pretty fun experience, it’s good to practice shooting moving objects!

Movie Review – 30 Days of Night – Pretty Scary

30 Days of Night

In Barrow, Alaska, the northernmost town in the U.S, the winter sun sets and does not rise for 30 days and nights. From the darkness comes an evil force that strikes terror on the town, and all hope is pinned on a husband-and-wife cop team.

I’ve been catching up with quite a few movies recently, mostly those that I’ve been meaning to watch for some time. This was one that had mixed opinions, some people said it sucked some people said it was good – agreed no-one said it was great..but hey it’s a vampire/zombie/horror flick. I’m not expecting anything groundbreaking or any Oscar winning performances.

Overall it was an enjoyable movie, the tension was built nicely with the ‘outsider’ showing up, some character building was done for the main cast and everyone played their roles admirably.

The only part I found really unbelievable was Josh Hartnett as the sheriff – he’s just way too young and clean cut. I could have bought him as the deputy..but sorry just not as the main man.

The vampires were believable, realistic and quite scary. Definitely more monster like than your suave Tom Cruise vampire, but more intelligent than your average zombie or monster.

30 Days of Night

The filming was generally good, apart from the action sequences..they seemed a bit undecided about the level of gore, sometimes the camera work was frenetic and you couldn’t really follow what was happening, then sometimes it was steady and pretty gruesome. Some of the shots are plain fantastic, like the overhead view of the chaos when the vampires go all out destroying the town.

Personally I’d love to see all the blood in gore in full detail with a steady camera and some close up shots.

There is some feeling in the movie too with people having to make moral choices of sacrificing loved ones for the greater survival. Don’t however expect any great plot or any twists and turns of complexity.

It’s one of the better horror/vampire flicks to have come out recently and it’s definitely worth a watch if you’re a fan of the genre.

I give it a solid but not inspirational 6.5/10.
