Movie Review – Pan’s Labyrinth – Brutal and Sweet (Laberinto del fauno, El)

Pan's Labyrinth

“Pan’s Labyrinth” is the story of a young girl who travels with her pregnant mother to live with her mother’s new husband in a rural area up North in Spain, 1944, after Franco’s victory. The girl lives in an imaginary world of her own creation and faces the real world with much chagrin. Fascist repression during the first years of Franco’s dictatorship is at its height in rural Spain and the girl must come to terms with that through a fable of her own

As the end of 2007 came to a close, I went through the IMDB top 250 list for 2006 and 2007 to make sure I hadn’t missed anything. I found a couple of movies I hadn’t seen yet such as Children of Men and Pan’s Labyrinth – plus a few more which I haven’t watched yet.

Rarely a foreign language movie makes the list, but this one did. In parts it was over-hyped (20 minutes standing ovation at Cannes? Won 3 Oscars. Another 61 wins & 55 nominations) but it was well justified in most parts.

It is a Spanish language movie, but it’s not overly dialogue based. It’s a very visually rich film with stunning cinematography, it has some kind of dualistic nature too. Some might expect the dualism to be the Fantasy world of the princess and the real world Spanish fight against fascism. The fact is the dualism is the contrast between the two, it’s almost like it’s a war movie AND a fantasy movie.

Both elements are captured beautifully and they fit together so masterfully, there’s not a lot of new subject matter here…but the way in which the movie plays out is seamless.

Ivana Baquero is fantastic as Ofelia and the monsters and the faun are believable. The movie is sometimes wonderful, sometimes terrifying.

Ofelia

There are some moments of extreme violence, which if are you are squeamish you may find hard to stomach. Somehow they don’t feel exploitative though.

Sergi López as the Captain is just fantastic, showing his many sides, his psychosis and his flaws. Maribel Verdú is also excellent as Mercedes, the head housekeeper.

If you haven’t watched this movie yet, you definitely should!

I give it a well worth it 8.5/10.

Smallest Car – Biggest Asshole

Learn to park dumbfuck.

Small car - big asshole

I mean SORRY – but is it really that hard to park in between the bright yellow lines? When your car is as big as a fucking matchbox.

I can kind of understand parking like this if it’s 3am and there’s no one in the car park and you can take up three spaces because no one would give a shit..

But it wasn’t – it was in the middle of office hours when there was a major shortage of parking spaces.

Live and Loud 2007 Part 4 – Joe Flizzow and M8 with Jaclyn Victor

Next up when it was getting dark before the big guns of Shaggy and Whitney were a few local acts. Namely Joe Flizzow (of Too Phat fame) and M8 with Jaclyn Victor, Noryn Aziz, Nikki and a bunch of others (Yes both of the pictures on Wikipedia of Joe and Jaclyn are mine!).

Joe Flizzow came out first with his crew and performed for quite some time.

Joe Flizzow

He had this cool shirt on which emulated a thick gold chain – and of course his trademark KL Cap.

Joe Flizzow

It was a fairly energetic performance with hats thrown to the crowd and some break-dancing.

The MidZone Countdown Party 2008 – New Years Eve at Mid Valley City

So on new years eve there was a big party at Mid Valley City called MidZone Countdown 2008.

Fireworks, dancers, drummers, good djs and a bunch of friends – sounds like fun eh? Well it was!

We got there quite early, to collect our media tags and to avoid the jam – strangely federal highway was empty and parking was a breeze. I have a feeling the whole world went into KL city to get jammed up against each other in the various street parties.

Our good friend Dabido was there from across the ocean – he arrived around the same time as us. Dabido and the Laydees.

And yeah someone has a bigger belly than me!

Big Bellies

It was pretty quiet when we first arrived – as we were pretty early but people started rolling in soon after.

MidZone Countdown

Things started hotting up with the sexy dancers than came on (They were rather obscene!).

Dancers

And the crowd started building up – with the atmosphere too. DJ Rowan was playing when we first got there and he was excellent! Rocking us with real quality dance hits from the 80’s and 90’s. It really got everyone moving.

MidZone rocked it! Great fireworks and good music.

When Terminal and Stoneface came on it was banging, and the visuals were excellent thanks to VJ Sort from Japan.

Will post more later.
