Well it’s working to some degree, half of the images are missing and a bunch of other stuff isn’t working properly yet.
Plus the last time I backed up the database was September 10th so all posts/comments since then have been lost.
I’ve gotten the Google cache from the front page, but those posts I was using the ‘more’ tag…I’ve lost the rest of the post.
I’ll try and recreate them the best I can over the weekend if my original host really can’t recover anything.
Apparently there was some kind of cascading failure, so when the hard-disk failed it also b0rked the backup server…and that was the end of that.
Everything is gone, all my important sites, money making sites…everything.
Luckily I was getting suspicious last month and did a quick backup, I’m not sure if I backed up the files though.
And now this site is hosted in Malaysia so it should be blazingly fast for people in Asia-pac.
Hopefully I’ll get the latest SQL dump from the previous host and put all the images back and we’ll be sorted.
If not I’ll patch things back together the best I can do.
Another lesson – don’t rely on others BACKUP REGULARLY…I wish I had got around to setting up the automated back-up for all the servers accounts like I kept meaning to.
It just goes to show procrastination is the mother of all fuck-ups.
eh Kim’s site still down leh?
Use Blogspot, don’t even have the option for backing up 🙂
Ouch. Quite a lot of data gone it seems, I used to be lazy as well for backing up my stuff, until 1 day hdd failed and i lost all my programs, files and stuff.
Got so pissed I wanted to kicked myself for not backing up more regularly.
Well, once was enough for me, once bitten twice shy.
ST: You said you got suspicious last month. What made you so?
Since you’re on WordPress, the new backups do have it automatically emailing it to your email. I just set it to regularly email it to my Gmail with Gmail archiving all my backups.
Worked like a charm until I there was a problem sending, but still…I managed to get all my backups.
Another good thing too, get a reliable webhost. It’s always about “cheap, good and fast. Pick two.” Mine’s in the states hosted by people I can trust, with daily backups. So even if my own hatchet job of a backup fails, I’ve still got my back watched.
My RSS reader archived your pages, but up to a certain limits. Email me and I will check when do I have. Cheers.
Sorry to hear that. well at least its up and running
Man, that sucks. Hope you can recover most (all would be better) of your content.
Reminds me of the crash we had 2 years back. Just remember to switch off your pings before recovering the posts. Good luck man.
own3d by hosting is the most sien.
that sucks man … the thing is that there is nothing much you can do …
Luckily that you still have a backup of it even though you have lost one month worth of posts. It could have been a lot worse. Although I wanted to install the wp-db-backup plugin a long time ago, I have been lazy. I installed it last night after knowing what has happened to your server. Hope you get to recover more of your posts.
I can’t afford this to happen to my blog. I scheduled my blog to auto backup once a week using a plugin.
All the best, and hope your site will recover soon.
it knocked up the backup server as well?
HOW>?!?!
People have been preaching, ‘Back up, back up’ but we keep procrastinating.
I guess I will have to back up my stuff now.
Ouch. No wonder your feed is showing the Zodiac review at the top. I have the old post’s in my reader but they are just the excerpts… Here’s to hope that you get your content back. 🙂
I WILL BACK UP MINE NOW!!!!111
Thanks for the wishes all! Things are 95% back to normal now, just a bit of 2 posts missing and all the comments since Sept 10th 🙁
I suggest everyone back-up EVERYTHING right NOW!
moons: Yah just never expect it to happen, especially when host promises back-up.
ben: There was a crash, some down-time, a complete lack of responses from the host and their support system license key expired..
Edrei: Yah will set-up a proper system this time, it was semi-manual as the host was supposed to be backing it up. It was hosted in the US too in a good data-center…and it wasn’t cheap either. Oh well, I’ll host it in Malaysia now with someone I trust and I’m setting up a VPS for my other sites so I can manage it myself.
melvin, foong: Thanks Melvin, sorted it now.
gbyeow: No worries, I ping manually 🙂
TenthOfMarch: Yah could have been 3 years of posts…lucky only 1 month.
Boss Stewie: No idea, they called it a ‘cascade’ failure.
