The Wedding – Day 1 – Ipoh, Food and DRINK!

So this weeked I was one of the Heng Tai for one of my best friends, Terence, who I’ve known in person for about 7 years now.

It was a really joyous occasion, to be part of the gang, it’s actually the first wedding of a real friend I’ve been to, not just another acquaintance, someone I care about.

It’s a very different feeling.

We set off to Ipoh in the afternoon, encountering one big momma of a storm on the way, it was pretty scary.

Perfect Storm

(You should check out the large version here).

It really rained heavily.

Movie Review – Leon: The Professional – My Favourite

Leon

A corrupt Drug Enforcement Administration boss and his thugs murder Natalie’s family in a drug deal gone awry. Orphaned by the massacre, Natalie is forced to take shelter in the apartment of a neighbor, Leon, whom she knows only slightly. He’s a loner and first generation immigrant, who also happens to be a professional hitman. He’s never had reason to care about anybody and she has no one else to

This is still one of my favourite movies of all time, I’ve been longing to watch it for quite a while but A Suan had stolen it and not given it back.

I’ve watched this movie maybe 10-15 times and I STILL love it, now that is testament to a great film.

It ranks it at #45 of the top 250 movies of all time at IMDB, which is also pretty impressive.

But I remember when I first saw it (It’s from 1994), it didn’t rank that highly and actually a lot of people hadn’t seen it as it wasn’t well received in America….Americans being rather blunt and simplistic found the movie somewhat paedophilic, which it isn’t of course.

It is Natalie Portmans first role, when she was just 12 years old and she does play a rather provocative character.

The movie starts out like any other trashy action movie, the first 5 minutes feeling stylised and lacking substance, but then the movie completely changes tack and takes you for an intense yet poignant ride.

It’s a movie about broken families, about living without emotion, about living with no one but a plant, or your fantasies.

The performance by a then twelve year old Portman is breathtaking, she captivates and really makes you feel her situation and loathing for her pathetic family.

Natalie Portman as Matilda

The soundtrack is stunning, to me this is what movie making is about.

There’s no big budget, there’s no special effects, the action isn’t overly gory or all the time, the score is original..and well the whole thing just shows there IS NO replacement for good solid acting.

Gary Oldman does what he does best as a creepy, sadistically obsessed, slightly psychotic corrupt police officer.

Above that…the film is just beautifully directed, it is a true masterpeice, you can watch it over and over and learn more, appreciate the subtleties of the movie.

Leon is not another cheap action movie, it’s one of the most intensely emotional films you will ever see.

Make sure you see the full uncut version though, not the US version which has a rather important 24 minutes cut out.

If you haven’t seen this movie, as I have seen…many people haven’t

GO AND SEE IT NOW.

It’s one of the few movies on this earth that I give a 10/10.

Red Book – The Police and Your Basic Rights in Malaysia

Know Your Rights

More than 60 lawyers and representatives from NGOs, the US Embassy and the press gathered at the Bar Council Auditorium this morning, all for a very noble cause, to witness the birth of a Red Book or Buku Merah known as “Polis Dan Hak-Hak Asas Anda”.

The malaysian bar council recently launched a publication titled “Red Book – Police and your Basic Rights”.

It contains information on your rights if/when you are stopped, arrested or questioned by the police and informs you on what you can or cannot do. It’s very informative on how to deal with the police (plain clothes or uniformed).

You can download both the English and Chinese versions here:

Red Book – The Police and your Basic Rights (ENGLISH)

Red Book – The Police and your Basic Rights (CHINESE)

Red Book – The Police and Your Basic Rights (MALAY)

It contains information such as colour schemes for police authority cards (blue is inspector or above, yellow below, white reserve and red suspended)

There’s more information at the Malaysian Bar including the full version in Bahasa Malaysia, English, Chinese and Tamil.

I think everyone should know about this resource and read it through once, so do let your friends know they have rights, and they should exercise them. Don’t be afraid of the Police.

It is indeed unforunate when people are ignorant of their basic human rights.

It is sad too that The Star, The Sun and The NST did not fully report the launch of this booklet (I hear the NST reported it, but only for KL region). The others bear no mention at all of the Red Book.

You can read about the Launch of the Red Book here.

The Quest For Siu Loong Pau – Dragon-I @ 1-Utama

After my falling in love with Siu Loong Pau in Penang, I’ve been looking for good ones in KL eversince.

This is part one, my first try. Siu Loong Pau in Dragon-I @ 1-Utama.

Dragon-I

It’s quite a posh looking restaurant, and there’s a little glass cubicle in the front corner where you can see the chefs actually making the buns.

Quite interesting, even if you don’t eat there.

This was what I wanted of course, Shanghai Siu Loong Pau.

Dragon-I Shanghai Siu Loong Pau

The place has pretty classical decor, quite nice, and is usually pretty busy with a lot of Chinese families having lunch/dinner there.

Dragon-I

I also ordered a Fried Sauce Noodle, it was ok, I have to say the one at Esquire Kitchen is much better.

Fried Sauce Noodle

Then came the Siu Loong Pau, the quality is ok, they should really serve them on a bed of lettuce though, to stop them sticking to the paper and breaking when you lift them up, ruins the whole concept.

Siu Loong Pau

I also found the pastry a little dry on the outside, like it had been oversteamed. I would give it a 5/10.

I also ordered the Spicy Wan Tan, I have to say these are really good, nice and tasty and cooked to perfection, this was the only dish that was actually good and is worth going back for. The rest were firmly wedged in mediocrity.

Spicy Wan Tan Dumplings

Alltogether I’d say, I’m not a great fan of Dragon-I, and won’t be going back for the Siu Loong Pau unless I’m really desperate.

What doneness do you want?

The waiter at Chili’s asked me after I ordered my Mushroom Swiss Burger.

I was dumbfucked, like huh? What?

Wait-ah:“What doneness do you want sir? For your Swiss Burger?”

Moi: “Excuse me? I didn’t catch you?

Wait-ah:“What doneness do you want?”

I paused after this, my brain churning for a while as to what he was talking about, it was like a puzzle, or some kind of wordgame in my head..

Doneness…Done?…Did…Done? Ah…Well Done! Medium Done…

He meant how did I want it cooked, ‘doneness’ there the good fella went and invented a new word.

“Ah, medium-well” I replied…that’s the doneness I require!

OMG WTF?

You might have thought people would go online and check out the definitions of any acronyms they put in their company names no?

OMG MEDIA

OH EM GEE

Good job..

Honestly, it doesn’t give me much faith in a marketing or new media company that uses a name like this without knowing the meaning.

Will it be WTF MEDIA next? Or GFY MARKETING?

The State of Traditional Media and Newspapers in Malaysia

Smart people don’t seem to read the local newspapers, nor any businessmen worth their salt (The Edge anyone?). As they are all pretty much biased, washed out tabloid trash.

Smart people read news online (BBC, CNN, Malaysiakini, Jeff Ooi) or read foreign papers, even those papers such as The Times of India are much better.

It seems people prefer to pay more for some decent news rather than the local papers which are only good for wrapping tomorrows nasi lemak in.

Even in the US the traditional media has shifted its paradigm toward the online medium, advertisers are pulling out of the printed papers and spending more heavily on the websites (Below the Line).

Look at the Washington Post for example, it’s an amazing site with a blog, trackbacks and integrated Technorati features.

According to a new forecast by Forrester Research, as much as 8 percent of all advertising spending will shift online by the year 2010. Much of this shift will come at the expense of tradional media channels such as magazines, direct mail and newspapers.

The problem with local media in my opinion is:

1) It’s sloppy, there are spelling mistakes, factual mistakes, research mistakes and so on, it’s basic journalism 101, please check your facts before publishing

2) It’s heavily censored, only what the government wants to come out comes out (seems to be the current government too, or whichever party that paper has an alliance to), sometimes feels a little like China

3) The content is poor, often syndicated and unoriginal, where is the real journalism, the hard talk, the cutting edge stories?

4) The specialist sections are just as bad, In-tech? Anyone even know which days it comes out? Anyone use it for anything other than eating their dinner on?

The television is just as bad, magazines are pretty poor too but seem to be getting better at least.

People just don’t care about newspapers here, stats show more than half of people that read newspapers don’t actually buy them, they just read them in the office because they are there. It’s a vicious circle, people don’t care, people don’t read, papers stay crappy, biased and with low circulations.

For example I got a URL in a national newspapers and saw a massive surge in hits of 0, yeah 0, no extra hits, no one read the paper and went online. Well if they did, it was less than 100 people, so I didn’t notice the difference.

If you did that in UK you’d get at least 100,000 hits over a week as BryanBoy saw when he was published in the UK Telegraph.

Sadly I don’t know what we can do to fix it, but well some of us are working on something to bring the new media and traditional media closer together, at least it’s a step in the right direction. It just seems to be taking forever to get started.

Bah I don’t even want to start on the quality of the television shows, argh! Comedy? You call that comedy? I call it 4 decades outdated slapstick that only appeals to people with IQs of 60 or below.

Movie Review – Fearless / Huo Yuan Jia – Jet Li

Jet Li - Fearless

Master Huo Yuan Jia was a supreme Martial Arts champion, founder and spiritual guru of the Jin Wu Sports Federation. “Fearless” tells his tale.

Yeah I know it’s kind of old, just got around to watching it though, I missed it on the cinema unfortunately.

Touted to be Jet Li’s last movie, must say I’ve been a fan of the boy since he was in Shaolin Temple back in 1982.

As a Ronny Yu film (Bride with White Hair, 51st State), with Yuen Wo-Ping choregraphy, you have to expect it to be action packed butt kicking classic!

And well it pretty much was, I heard some people mention it wasn’t a very good film, but I don’t know why?

I found it very good indeed, Jet Li acted well for once (reminded me of his excellent character representation of Wong Fei Hung).

The fight scenes were beautiful and pretty original.

The movie was well paced with good character developement and a nice non-sequential narration of the story, the scenery was beautiful and although a little cheesy (preaching) at times it is a very morally sound tale.

It did indeed score a very strong 7.5 over at IMDB.

Plus it’s based (very loosely) on a true story, the story of Huo the spiritual founder of the Jing Wu martial arts school.

Sadly it was heavily edited to a more mainstream length, I would love to see the uncut version some day.

However, Fearless is badly edited from the original 150 min version. To fit in the market demand, Fearless has been mercilessly chopped into a 103 min theatrical version. Michelle Yeoh, who makes a special appearance in Fearless, has been unfortunately removed. The duel between Jet Li and Thai boxer has also been removed, sad to say. Somehow, the movie has make the audience wants to go for something more than 103 min version.

I thoroughly recommend it anyway, Jet Li’s best movie for years.

I give it a worthy 8/10.
