On Friday, Shaun is in a rut. At 29, he’s coasted through life–and still hasn’t gotten very far, usually winding up at the local pub, the Winchester. His roommate Ed looks up to him–when he can take his eyes off the TV, that is. Liz is re-evaluating their relationship, particularly after Shaun fails to do something special for their anniversary on Saturday. That day, there are train delays, people fainting in the streets, TV news reporters on unexplained calamities
I’ve been wanting to watch this movie for a while as I’ve heard it’s right up my street..
1) It’s about Zombies (Must be a good thing)
2) It’s British (Must be FANTASTIC)
3) It’s a Romantic Zombie Comedy (About the only way I can bear Romantic Comedy – WITH ZOMBIES IN IT!)
So let’s call it a ro-zom-com!
It scored a VERY good 7.9 on IMDB which with a few more good votes could push it into the top 250.
I was expecting it to be a decent film, I was expecting it to be so good! It was a really good film, funny, touching, a little scary at times, beautifully written.
Especially if you are familiar with UK culture, and movies. It makes digs at several other films and references a few (Reservoir Dogs, 28 Days Later etc.). A lot of it is social commentary, especially targetting Londoners, anyone familiar with the place will find it hilarious.
It’s about a real loser who works in a small electrical store, now this guy is a proper loser, not like the American ‘loser movies‘ where the guy is actually really fucking successful. This guy has a boring life, a weird family, an annoying best friend/flatmate and no prospects.
The Winchester is everything!
I’d say it’s not for everyone, there’s a lot of swearing and a fair bit of violence and it makes a LOT of movie references. Especially horror movie references. There are a lot of UK actors that make at least cameo appearances too if you are familiar with Little Britain (Matt Lucas) or The Office (Martin Freeman).
Now I want to see From Dusk till Shaun!
This is a very funny, witty, clever film, sadly I think it will go over many people’s heads, but I think at SOME level it can be enjoyed by everyone.
I give it an excellent 9/10.
One of the funniest and most original movies I’ve seen for quite a long time.
Zombie movies? NO!
Zombie romantic movies? NO!
Zombie ramantic comedies? NO!!!!!!!!
NO NO NO NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
this movie has been shown on Astro before liao… but have yet to watch it.
I love the scene where they are looking for records to throw at the zombie:
Ed: Purple Rain.
Shaun: No.
Ed: Sign o’ the Times.
Shaun: Definitely not.
Ed: The Batman soundtrack?
Shaun: Throw it.
better than any romero stuff EVAR!
Romantic Comedy – WITH ZOMBIES IN IT!
A bit like picking up a girl at a Computer Convention then! 🙂
Ah, yes… Shawn of the Dead.
I also liked the bit right before the records scene – right after Shawn and Ed’s first encounter with a zombie when Ed slowly advances the film on his disposable camera.
Classic stuff!
And there’s also the bit when Shawn’s giving that motivational talk to his staff, and all of the young wankers are chewing gum!!!
I found this film hilarious but my best mate doesn’t think it’s all that funny.
always wanted my own pet zombie that can play tekken, lol…
FA: You should watch it first before you comment 😉
mike: You should watch it marn, damn farnee liao
Chris & eyeris: Yeah the records part was classic “Dire Straits?” “Chuck it!”
seth: Tekken playing zombies are cool eh? Seeing one pushing trolleys in the local supermarket may freak me out a little though.
definitely a great movie…i watched it early this year on DVD…
the best scene? Shaun waking up and moaning and walking just like a zombie…pretty good commentary on the lifestyle of people like him, don’t u think ST?
The first zombie movie that got me hooked was the remake of Night of the Living Dead. Previously, I thought zombies were boring, compared to vampire, werewolves etc.
But right now I think they’re the most terrifying. There’s some totally inhuman about them. Vampires and werewolves, and even Frankenstein’s monster have emotions. But zombies are completely mindless, and I’ve yet to met a Goth who wanted to be one.
A pretty cool movie, I loved some of the gags and jokes, but I find it more scarier than I thought it would be. (The last scene were they ripped the guts out of the bespectacled guy was kind of revolting. =()
But overall, a must-see. =)

Actually, I thought that scene was funny too – especially how he was torn apart sooooo easily.
Another favourite bit:
(Tense string section background music)
Shawn: Mum, have you been bitten? (sounding worried)
Mum: Me? No, no, no… but Philip has.
(Music stops)
Shawn: Oh, ok. (sounding relieved)
have u watched the shutter?
alan: Yeah that’s why I consider it a satire and social commentary as much as anything else, that show’s really he already is a zombie.
Heh there were loads of classic scenes, like the Reservoir Dogs 3 way hold off with beer bottles.
skyflakes: Yah it’s one of the scariest horror films I’ve ever watched, it ranks in my top 5 horror movies of all time I guess. More of a shocker than a straight out horror though, but still excellently done.
To zombie “lovers” out there .. you may wan to check out Nights of the Living Dead 3D .. releasing this year ..
If you liked Shaun Of The Dead then you should definately watch Braindead!
It’s the classic tale of life, love and zombies!
(ever so gory and ever so corny but just so darned hilarious)
🙂
J: Yeah Brain Dead is nice too! Much preferred ‘Bad Taste‘ though if we are talking about Jackson’s early works 😉
Shaolin Tiger:
Hmmmm,…. have not watched “Bad Taste” yet…
(It looks good… I must look out for it!)
It’s such a small world tho… I heard from my friend Pat that he is your colleague….
🙂
J: Yeah look out for it, or a torrent or something 😉 It is a small world, and indeed I do have to put up with Pat every day.
Hahaha…
I can totally relate….
‘Tho it can’t be worse than my life in Melbourne:
I was living in the same dorm as Pat for 2 years…
(I am so scarred!)
J: Oh dear, I feel your pain. That must have been a traumatising experience.
Uh-huh….
*stares vacantly while nodding*
(hahahaha)
I just watched it… shit pretty good for a zombie movie.
