OMFG Hacking for JESUS?!? Hacker vs Cracker? Script Kiddiots and more..

A few Malaysia sites got 0wned hard this morning…by some group who’s ultra cheese tagline is ‘Hacking for Jesus’

Brother please…

The site in question is https://www.mada.gov.my/ if you visit around the time I posted this you’ll still see the real thing..

If not screenshot:

A lot of .my sites got whacked apparently by these guys, probably some lame mass defacement (lots of web sites on the same physical machines), check out Zone-H.

This kind of stuff also has a cheesy name, it’s called ‘Hacktivism‘ something to do with ‘Technopolitics’…

If you are going to deface pages (ultimate skiddy behaviour) at least admit why you are doing it, because of your stupid adolescent ego ok…no other reason.

A huge amount of it goes on, I classify it as new age graffiti, most of it is ugly pointless and ego based..but puhlease…not hacking for Jesus, that’s just plain WRONG.

I found out originally from my friend Dhillon at Hack in the Box.

Real hackers don’t deface web pages…actually the truly scary blackhat hackers are unheard of…no one even knows they exist..

They say 80% of fortune 500 companies still have unknown backdoors(covert entry channels unknown except to those who put them there).

Anyway this could turn into some long winded and setting the world to rights…so here we go. Prepare to be enlightened.

Hackers are not people who deface web sites (defacing means changing the content to a funny pictures, personal message or as in en vogue now a political message).

Hackers are people with a love of technology and in general how things work, they have inquisitive minds, curious souls and unlike most they need to know WHY and HOW things work..not just that they work.

The media often mislabels crackers as hackers..

To quote wikipedia, which sums it up pretty well:

Hacker is a term used to describe different types of computer experts. It is also sometimes extended to mean any kind of expert, especially with the connotation of having particularly detailed knowledge or of cleverly circumventing limits. The meaning of the term, when used in a computer context, has changed somewhat over the decades since it first came into use, as it has been given additional and clashing meanings by new users of the word.

Currently, “hacker” is used in two main ways, one positive and one pejorative. It can be used in the computing community to describe a particularly brilliant programmer or technical expert (for example: “Linus Torvalds, the creator of Linux, is a genius hacker.”). This is said by some to be the “correct” usage of the word (see the Jargon File definition below). In popular usage and in the media, however, it generally describes computer intruders or criminals. “Hacker” can be seen as a shibboleth, identifying those who use it in its positive sense as members of the computing community.

As you can see the negative term has crept into the media and is firmly taken hold..this annoys most of us in the ‘hacking’ community..

It is true there is a middle ground, some skills are used by people from both sides of the fence, but those running downloaded scripts from the net (script kiddies) without any comprehension of what they do should be spanked back to high-school and definately not given the respect worthy title of hackers.

I suggest reading the whole Wikipedia post if you are interested, it pretty much covers all bases, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hacker

There are also a few more classifications which you might have heard, Black Hat, White Hat and Grey Hat.

Black Hats are the ‘bad’ guys, doing malicious stuff, busting up networks and writing DDoS tools, they are still proper hackers, they are just on the wrong side of the law, Script Kiddies are by no means blackhat…they are just plain idiotic.

White Hats are the ‘good’ guys…security professionals, ethical hackers, whatever you want to call them, the people reaping the money in the security industry, some are excellent, most are not…more skill always lies on the Black Hat side in my experience..The good guys, as with anything are always playing catch-up. Mostly Hacking for fame, notierity, money, altruism or any non-malicious cause.

Grey Hats are the happy medium…perhaps a past in Black Hat activities…or some experience of malicious hacking, moved into the security industry in a professional role and cleaned up…or just undefined…somewhere in the grey wasteland between..I think I am regarded as being here.

There is another metric which is a basic 3-tier pyramid..at the top, the thin part is the elite, the super hackers, those few geniuses that discover new types of vulnerability, write tools like nmap, write the Linux Kernel and so on…then below this is a slightly bigger tier which contains people like me, talented sys-admins, skilled security professional, not super genius status…but good and generally respected…Then at the bottom is the largest part, far larger than the other 2 combined together many times over..this contains the dross, the script kiddies, the people that think having a MSCE makes them god..

I also love the Conscience of a Hacker, from Phrack Magazine…also known as The Hackers Manifesto, it’ll give you some insight into the real hacker mindset..

It’s something I identify with…it’s a beautiful piece of writing, and when I read it the first time I ‘tingled’ haha…I’ve bolded those lines that have been part of my life..

The Hackers Manifesto

Another one got caught today, it’s all over the papers. “Teenager Arrested in Computer Crime Scandal,” “Hacker Arrested after Bank Tampering”…

Damn kids. They’re all alike.

But did you, in your three-piece psychology and 1950’s technobrain, ever take a look behind the eyes of the hacker?

Did you ever wonder what made him tick, what forces shaped him, what may have molded him?

I am a hacker, enter my world…

Mine is a world that begins with school… I’m smarter than most of the other kids, this crap they teach us bores me…

Damn underachievers. They’re all alike.

I’m in junior high or high school. I’ve listened to teachers explain for the fifteenth time how to reduce a fraction. I understand it.

“No, Ms. Smith, I didn’t show my work. I did it in my head…”

Damn kid. Probably copied it. They’re all alike.

I made a discovery today. I found a computer. Wait a second, this is cool.

It does what I want it to. If it makes a mistake, it’s because I screwed it up. Not because it doesn’t like me…Or feels threatened by me…Or thinks I’m a smart ass…Or doesn’t like teaching and shouldn’t be here…

Damn kid. All he does is play games. They’re all alike.

And then it happened… a door opened to a world… rushing through the phone line like heroin through an addict’s veins, an electronic pulse is sent out, a refuge from the day-to-day incompetencies is sought… a board is found.

“This is it… this is where I belong…”

I know everyone here… even if I’ve never met them, never talked to them, may never hear from them again… I know you all…

Damn kid. Tying up the phone line again. They’re all alike…

You bet your ass we’re all alike…

We’ve been spoon-fed baby food at school when we hungered for steak…the bits of meat that you did let slip through were pre-chewed and tasteless.

We’ve been dominated by sadists, or ignored by the apathetic.

The few that had something to teach found us willing pupils, but those few are like drops of water in the desert.

This is our world now… the world of the electron and the switch, the beauty of the baud. We make use of a service already existing without paying for what could be dirt-cheap if it wasn’t run by profiteering gluttons, and you call us criminals.

We explore…
and you call us criminals.

We seek after knowledge…
and you call us criminals.

We exist without skin color, without nationality, without religious bias
and you call us criminals.

You build atomic bombs, you wage wars, you murder, cheat, and lie to us and try to make us believe it’s for our own good, yet we’re the criminals.

Yes, I am a criminal.
My crime is that of curiosity.
My crime is that of judging people by what they say and think, not what they look like.
My crime is that of outsmarting you, something that you will never forgive me for.

I am a hacker, and this is my manifesto.
You may stop this individual, but you can’t stop us all…after all, we’re all alike.

+++The Mentor+++

My area of hacking is information…I am information scientist, gathering it, adapting it, improving it, collaborating it, dissemenating it..I am also good at taking good things and making them better..I am a hacker in the kitchen, the living room and in the world of bits and bytes…

This post is far too long anyway, perhaps I shall continue this topic another day..it just started out about a simple web-page defacement…

Kung-Pow! The weekend and rain..

Ok well it rained like non-stop from one night to the next morning, so it was a pretty moist weekend (in more ways than one)..

Saturday I didn’t write anything, because well basically I didn’t do anything…I got home from class and slept 2pm-10pm, which was nice..

Got up and went for dinner somewhere half decent, had a mixed grill with black pepper sauce, yum!

Sunday I watched Kung-Pow: Enter The Fist

This is definate love/hate experience as signified by the IMDB perfect 5.0 score (900 10/10 and 800 1/10 with some inbetween)..

I thought it was hilarious, some kind of cheap ass feel stoners movie with a big budget for special effects..

It definately helps if you are a fan of old skool, badly dubbed no-plot cheesy kung fu movies..I used to collect them, my awesome VHS collection was the envy of my friends.

You know the types, absurd characters, no plots, amazing fight sequences, unheard of actors, Sunday afternoon junk food and hang-over material..

It made fun of the endearing aspects of these movies, horrible dubbing, weird sound effects and vocal noises, bad continuation (10 eyeballs for 4 guys?)..and so on.

After that I went out to grab some food with some students, it was cool, finally had some chinese food, sweet and sour chicken and boiled rice…normally I’d go for pork, but well you don’t get the option here..

It was good!

Tried to catch Bridget Jones aswell but it wasn’t showing, strangely there was no 11-ish shows last night, only 9.30 and no Bridget Jones, perhaps Friday was just a sneak peak and it’s releasing next week officially. I’ll catch it some time this week.

So after that I had a tour of the whole of Brunei and it’s happening spots…it took an hour, use your imagination….yeah it IS that boring. Then headed home and went online for a while. I would have taken some pics…but well there was nothing to see haha

I’ve noticed one thing though, the Radio is good here, because they play Capital FM live stream straight from the UK haha, would prefer if they played Radio 1 though, my favourite station and a lot less commercial…It’s nice to hear Johnny Vaughn on the breakfast show though.

I bought a couple more net cards yesterday too, so I shouldn’t get cut off so often..My colleague has gone back to KL so I’m totally alone in the house now..but at least I have the car so I can go out and get terribly lost all on my own (a weirdly exciting thought, the prospect feels interesting)..

I’ll go and take some pictures of the nicer looking things here (The 2 mosques).

I plan to take a trip to Jerudong Park aswell…even though I’ve heard most of the rides are closed because they lack maintenance and have become a bit scary..

My passport finally came back too, visa un-extended so it was all in vain &!@#!@%$^#!!

So the crux is, I have to leave *anyway*…I’ll probably drive to Miri at the weekend or something, have a beer or 15.

That’s it for now..

Ah Lians Lian, Ah Bengs Beng, Lala’s and aLtErNaTiNg cApItAlS

*sigh* what a sad state of affairs..

Just wanted to mumble a bit about the amount of Ahlians and Ahbengs around now, for those of you not native to these shores..how to explain..

An Ahbeng would be a stereotyped Singaporean/Malaysian male who speaks local slangs (Hokkien or Cantonese mixed with English and Malay) and likes to be noticed by wearing trendy (read ugly) fashion items, ie, tight outfits of luminous colour (Prominent brands like Versace, Moschino etc), coloured/dyed/bleached (Known as Golden Monkey hair) hair and accessories such as handphones, necklaces, all of which are conspicusously displayed. Shirts with dragons on are the thing, and tatoos too, lots of tatoos, usually also dragons. They usually drive normal cars such as a Wira 1.3 with an Evo III full bodykit, alloy spoiler, racing rims, 5″ barbeque set exhaust and super loud techno playing stereo with flashing lights. (You can see such cars at The Rice Boy Page). Full Fast & Furious style with neon lights under the car.

They love to listen to Techno music (known as feng tau, literally translated means ‘shake head’) and dance badly.

Typical Ahbeng car. Typical Ahbeng look.

More info can be found here: https://members.tripod.com/~kunkun/ahbeng2.htm

The oldest standing Ahbeng and Ahlian page hehe.

You can also check out the witty commentary at https://www.ahbeng.com/

There is also a Hong Kong variation commonly known as ‘Gu Wak Jai’ something like those guys from the Young And Dangerous movie series.

Most Ahbengs are emulating these guys (Ekin Chen, Jordan Cham etc).

Many are real gangsters, or wanna-be’s mostly involved in some part with some kind of Triad gang like their gu wak jai idols.

The Ahlian would be the female version, something like the asian version of a Bimbo. Baby G watch, in pink, again lots of branded stuff like Ferragamo headbands or belts, Versace, Gucci, LV etc..Mostly fake but the label must still be prominently displayed along with the latest handphone with pink cover. Huge platform shoes are a requirement and blonde/red/blue streaks in the hair, the aim is to look like one of the gorgeous Hong Kong pop chicks..but it rarely works.

Typical AhLian look.

They also both like to swear a huge amount with such gems as ‘Diu lei mou chao hai!’ ‘Ni na ma’ ‘Diu nia seng’ and ‘Ka ni na!’ The favourite alltimer I think is ‘Chao cibai’ shouted/screamed like CHOOOOOOOOWWWWW CHEEEEEEEE BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIII

If you enter any cybercafe you will see some bengs too playing counterstrike, howling like monkeys with the speakers on full blast..the Ahlians will be sitting around playing 02Jam and giggling.

Ok what brought this on…some classic gem I saw on one of the ‘community sites’..

Check this out:

I LIke TO WatcH The AcTioN MOvIe Such As 2fUsT2fURiOS…HErM..C.S.I iS AlSO tHE mOST i lIKe TO wATCH…gHOST bLOcKbUSTER..aLsOaLSo…hMM…aND AlL pROgRAM AT mtV,[V] AnD hITz.tV..

I mean wtf? Excuse me? This is like fulfilling all of the above stereotypes..and this isn’t a one off, if you browse friendster you will find hundreds of profiles filled with crap like this..

She also said…

I lovE MusiX Very WeLL And No bOdy caN stop Me to Love It…eSpeciaLLy EngLish SOng…I AlSo Like tO BikE My SouLMate SkuTEr

Seriously..wtf?

What’s with the whole alternate capitalisation thing? I really, really, REALLY can’t stand that.

People please get your own identity..

If you go to any of the clubs in KL, you will see plenty of Ahbengs and Ahlians, enjoy the experience.

There are also SPG’s which I will perhaps explain another day..

If I offended anyone I know..sorry, but you are an Ahbeng and you know it 😛 Fortunately most the people I know have grown up and are no longer in that stage (even me, I have retired most of my dragon shirts).

Shaving cuts, food and rain?!?

Oh well exciting stuff over here as usual…

Went to a couple more open houses last night, food was decent as usual, met some interesting people.

Some of my colleagues here arrived yesterday from KL, lucky for them they only have to endure the place for 2 days..

My boss was here and said something like:

OMG, what has this place done to you, you’ve started shaving?!?

I’m not a great fan of scraping my face..

My friend, smoking partner and buddy colleague said…”Woah looks like this place is turning you into a zombie“…I guess it is, kinda sad really, drains the life out of me.

It has been raining non-stop since last night…so everything is kinda moist…was nice to sleep though, but hard to wake up in the morning with that relaxing, soothing patter of rain.

The most exciting thing that happened yesterday was that I cut myshelf shaving, I misjudged when moving the blade from my lip to my chin…and sliced part of myself off.

I mean the thing was fucking tiny ok like 1/4 of a mm, but it bled…and bled…and hurt…and bled

It was bleeding like I’d severed a main freaking vein or something.

I swear it bled less when I made a 1/4” deep gash in my thumb with a stanley knife (that kinda spurted though, not flowed, I hit the bone).

Also…I was pretty annoyed last night…

I tried to watch the New Police Story DVD I bought from Uncle Ho…as all my friends said it was good..

First up, the Cantonese channel didn’t work, so I had to watch it dubbed into Mandarin, which kinda sucks as it’s supposed to be in Hong Kong (I always prefer to watch films in their original language, whatever that may be).

Secondly the subtitles were totally screwed, out of sync and missing half of the time, so I had to try and infer what was going on…not too hard as it’s really not so complicated.

Then around 1 hour 8 minutes into the moving it started screwing up, jerking, freezing, skipping..

Argh!

I mean I don’t mind so much when DVD’s plain don’t work, but when they mess up half way or more through the movie…man that really bugs me.

I’ve been thinking about other serious crap I can blog about…or not so serious crap haha

I should perhaps add a section for food too as I love cooking and I love eating…

I was explaining my philosophy to someone yesterday, we have to eat everyday…so why let it become a chore? Embrace is, enjoy it, learn about it, appreciate it..most people don’t appreciate what they eat, what it contains, how it’s created, where it originated from and so on…

Maybe if you are lucky you’ll get to taste my cooking someday…some of you already have, yes they are still alive somehow 😛

I slept late last night..as a token seen as though it was Friday night…felt I should try and remember what it’s like to sleep late…even though in KL normal for a Friday night is like 5am..I managed to stay up here past 2am!

Awesome!

That’s all for now…will whinge more later.

Stupid Phone…

Oh well..I got a Bruneian SIM card last night cos I had to call some people back in KL..

So I stuck it in my phone and made the required calls…I put my Maxis SIM back in then noticed ALL my SMS’s had disappeared…man that sucks.

I had some funny ones, some sweet ones, some old ones…all gone.

Ok now I know why the SIM archive feature exists *sigh*

All those hot chicks buayaing me via SMS, you’ll have to send me some more nice messages ok 😛

Also added the latest DOTA 4.4c to the download post.

I need to do my links page too soon…so much effort, then the site will be complete for now, haha oh yeah and upload some pics..

I was going to add another section to the site aswell…but I forgot what it was haha.

I also hate the way Sony Ericsson handles the call log..it’s horrible, hey SE check out Nokia, they got you beat on that front..

The worst thing for me is if the missed called/call was not ‘today’ you only get the date not the time, annoying, it also doesn’t order them in the order you received them..it’s kinda random.

Oh well.

No news today…

Shaolin Kung-Fu Tom-Yam Indomee

Been kinda down today..then watched some crappy depressing movies on HBO..including The Joy Luck Club, which is supposed to be uplifting, and I’ve meant to watch it a few times but missed it, as it’s also supposed to be good, I just found it kinda depressing…a whole load of people with fucked up lives.

Then some other soppy crap about an old man going senile…the finality of death and madness, excellent..It was called Dad, with Ted Danson.

Here I was starving to death, when I was inspired..

I forgot how good it is to cook yourself food and really enjoy it…even if it’s something simple and quick..

Thanks for the inspiration 😛

2 packs of Mamee tom yam noodles, some garlic, ginger and fresh chilli..

Some kind of Indian wok like structure used for frying the above mentioned business, shame it doesn’t have a handle..or I could have done some of that pro tossing business..

The finished product, along with perfectly cooked buffalo eye, delicious and nutritious..I’m sure.

The upside..we have a maid so I don’t have to wash up the 3 pans, plate, fork, chopping board and knife I used to create this culinary delight.

I feel better already.

Data Security & Digital Forensics

Oh yeah I did some dumb ass himbo shit yesterday…I was re-arranging some stuff on my hard-drive and I cut and pasted a whole drive by mistake..then I undid it..

Everything looked fine…I didn’t realise till hours later than I’d deleted like 6 months of REALLY important work…so I kinda panicked for a second..

Then I remembered I’m a geek….some more I am a security geek, so I know that when you delete your files, they aren’t REALLY deleted…the file system just marks them as deleted and you can no longer see them in Windows..They are only REALLY wiped when you fill up your disk with other crap and the blocks are re-used and your original files are over-written..

Anyway this is the basic concept of computer forensics, to be safe against this wipe your slack space and if you sell your PC don’t just delete your files or format it, do a 7 pass over-write with something like Eraser. As I said above the only safe method is to overwrite everything, then delete it all, then overwrite again. And this is not even fail-safe…using Electron/Digital Microscopy the big agencies can still recover your data..The only truly safe way is incineration 🙂

The way I explain that is this…imagine your hard disk is a tin tray, you put your data in by hitting it with a hammer, you erase it by hitting the other side with a hammer…you aren’t going to get 100% accuracy on the dent so there will be some residual data..They can find all this and reconstruct it into something meaningful, but it costs a huge amount of money..

As with most things security related..it’s a balance, the cost of protection vs what you are protecting vs the cost of recovery/intrusion.

For most people a free tool like eraser and a few hours of wiping is fine 🙂 Call it Data Sanitization…keep your house clean 🙂

If you really want to know the guts behind it you can read this article:

Secure Deletion of Data from Magnetic and Solid-State Memory”

Most people don’t know this..once it’s ‘gone’ from the recycle bin they think it’s lost forever. Well in truth unless you’ve written a shit load of stuff to your disk since you deleted it, chances are it’s still very much there.

The most powerful commercial tool in this field is Encase, the government have more powerful shit, but we aren’t even supposed to know that.

(I lost about 300mb of stuff, it took me about 15 minutes to fully recover it all).

Let me illustrate with some lovely art..ok I have a very important picture which shows me in a compromising situation…I wish to delete it..

So I shift-delete it, it’s gone, not in the recycle bin ah I’m safe:

Then Shaolin comes along and fires up his trust undeletion utility:

See it recovered everything, including the original file name and some other blank filenames..

So who is Kinoshita Ayumi you ask? Go Google it 😀

Another tip to note is..if you’ve ‘lost’ files, don’t write anything to that drive or especially that partition. And when you restore the files, also restore to a different partition or you might find that files you are trying to restore disappear half way through as though overwrote them…

The software I used for this was Active UNDELETE.

Anyway I have to go for lunch now, hope you learnt something new today..

I am er what? Man I feel horrible today..

mRNA
You are mRNA. You’re brilliant, full of important,
interesting information and you’re a great
friend to the people you care about. You may
have sides to you that no one understands. But
while you understand more than most people,
you’re only half-there most of the time.

Which Biological Molecule Are You?

Man I woke up on another plane today, I think someone got drunk last night in my honour, felt like I had a horrible hangover…I still feel pretty crappy now and it’s almost lunch time..

Open house was nice last night, some decent food, crappy net card ran out early again though and I got cut off before I was ready!

Haven’t heard any more about Colombo yet..so keep it real.

I still need to buy a mattress and curtains *sigh*, just give me some peace for a while..

Nothing much else to say now…I feel dizzy..

Hmm…Call me globe hopping Sultan hand shaker?

Oh well I have a fair amount of stuff to ramble on about..

So I better get started..

Today was another normal day in Brunei for the most part, I had to get up in the middle of the night (7am) and go to class..

My student picked me up in a new car…Mitsubishi Airtrek Turbo…which he just bought at the weekend…bastard…haha

The thing has pretty much the same engine as the Evo VII aswell, so you can strap on the 05 turbo and weee…off you go. And the guy is sad because he can only go up to 400bhp, because of the auto gearbox…*sigh*

The sickening thing it’s only $46,000 Brunei dollars…thats like 90,000RM…for that you can’t even get a Perdana in Malaysia…sick sick sick

Anyway today we visited the Istana Nurul Iman (the palace, and at that the LARGEST residential palace in the world) to check out the Sultans yard and attend his open house and shake his hand. Nice man to say a few years ago he was richest in the world, and he has the largest collection of Rolls Royces in the world..

Still kinda old fashioned in some ways though, like the chicks have one queue the guys another, segregated.

He gave me some Goodies, yay! Not really local delicacies as I expected though…

See inside, sweets and stuff:

Also a nice card with his handsome face:

It was hot and sweaty with hoards of people, I was like 76,819th to shake his hand…like he gives a shit haha

Anyway it was a good experience, but no cameras were allowed so no pics, I think one of the guys from our crew had some pics around abouts so I’ll ask him to pass them over.

We went to the Ministers house again after and had some good food, the Biryani was awesome!

I’ve taken some pics of my house too so I’ll put them in the gallery soon.

Also I just found out my beloved KL friends might be without me for a little longer..I got a rumour yesterday and an e-mail today saying I might be posted to Colombo a few days after I get back..for 21 days..

Actually I won’t mind too much as long as I’m back in KL for new years, I heard Colombo is pretty happening, with a nice resort and some sweet bitches, I mean beaches. Food is rumoured to be good too, oh well another place to travel too…it must be better than Brunei.

Anyway I think that’s about it for now, I’m sure I’ve bored you all enough for today. I’ve gotta go shower so I can go to another couple of open house thingies and eat more biscuits 0_0..

So what does the G mean?

You are a real perfectionist in life and in love. You have very high standards for yourself, and you are the same in the romance department. You are looking for a partner who lives up to your requirements in intelligence, popularity and attractiveness. They must be at least your equal, or you just won’t be interested. You especially want your love partner to be well-matched with you in terms of intelligence, so you can have challenging conversations and stimulate each other mentally. You also tend to be drawn to people with a lot of status or popularity, because you feel that you can enhance your own status through the partnership. You are a busy person and you take your responsibilities seriously, so finding a love partner may not be your first priority in life. When you do go looking, you’ll take the same careful approach to love as you do to everything else. You can really throw yourself into a romantic relationship, but it has to mesh well with the other things in your life or you just won’t have time or energy for it. You tend to have short-term hookups with very attractive people, but you end up moving on when they don’t meet your other standards, or they are hard to get to know. You don’t get close to people quickly. When you do, it will be a powerful match.

Pretty accurate really..you gotta be smart, popular and attractive 🙂

Ok so report for today, I watched The Day After Tommorow, it was a bit better than I expected..worth watching anyway 🙂 Especially here..

Went to the Indian joint again…man back the same salty mush.

Apparently the freak time the food was good…was during Raya when they had a temporary chef..now the normal chef is back and the food is back to crap.

Other than that done nothing today…
